A Continuation of Remediation of Brine Spills with Hay

Period Covered by the Report: August 1, 2003 - October 31, 2003
Date of Report: Dec. 1, 2003
EPA Agreement Number:
Title:A Continuation of Remediation of Brine Spills with Hay
Investigators: Laura P. Ford and Kerry L. Sublette
Institution: University of Tulsa
Research Category:
Project Period: May 1, 2003 - April 30, 2004

More soil samples were taken on September 27, 2003. We learned better how to use the infiltrometer, but we could not test G9-2 because the ground was too hard. For G9-4, the infiltration rate was zero. Plots that received hay have the highest infiltration rates, but not uniformly so.

Dr. Ford will make an oral presentation on the project at the 10th International Petroleum Environmental Conference in Houston in November 2003. Shailendra Singh, the graduate student working on this project, will give a poster presentation on the project.

Shailendra has designed a microcosm study that will look specifically at the effect of hay and fertilizer on removal of salt components. The microcosms will be watered enough to wash water through the soil, and the leachate will be collected, measured, and analyzed for salt component concentrations.
